Ellis Prach - Heat Exchanger and Furnace Evaluation... Thurs. Sept. 22

This class is hands-on with each type furnace chamber. The time will be devoted methods of inspection that will help the inspector quickly evaluate the furnace by going through a number of factors that will indicate how much stress has been put on a furnace heat exchanger. A training manual describes in detail every style heat exchanger and how to check a chamber for cracks and defects.

Steve Wisdom - Building Science for the Inspector & Energy Auditor... Thurs. Sept. 22

This class covers the basics of Building Science and how it affects the home. We will look at the inter-relationships of the home’s components and how they interact to make either a sick home or a great energy efficient home. Some of the topics covered include heat transfer, insulation, climate data, moisture and how it moves, air leakage and pressure diagnostics, ventilation and air quality. This class is the first step in preparing for the Building Performance Institute’s “Building Analyst Certification”.

Bob Kamer - FEMA Housing Inspections... Thurs. Sept. 22

FEMA's Inspection Guidelines are presented and discussed. PB's computer operating system, Pegasus, as well as FEMA's ACE3 inspection software (Automated Inspection Estimating), are demonstrated. Inspectors have the opportunity for hands on practice using these software inspection programs through exercises using a Fujitsu Pen Tablet computer.  The exercises consist of different disaster scenarios, depicting damages to a home caused by an earthquake, flood, hurricane, etc.

This 8 hour course is designed to guide you through the process of looking for inherent problems that are not always obvious during a normal visual inspection.

  • Mold and health affects and why you need a good contract
  • Different types of mold
  • Surveying techniques
  • How to follow standards and what protocols you need to meet for sampling
  • Proper report writing techniques
  • Submitting samples to the laboratory
  • Your obligation to your client after receiving the test results
  • Other types of environmental sampling and the process of these type tests, such as airborne bacteria, VOC’s (volatile organic compounds), soil gases, or allergen sampling will also be covered
  • What type of equipment is needed for sampling
  • Hands on training/instruction of sampling techniques
  • Training will include how to evaluate the property, collection of samples, and the paper work process with the proper chain of custody forms.
